Frequently asked questions
What formula does this calculator use?
The wave equation rearranged for frequency: f = v ÷ λ, where f is in hertz (Hz), v in m/s, and λ in metres. The full equation is v = f·λ; dividing by λ gives f = v ÷ λ.
Can you show a worked example?
Sound travels at ≈ 343 m/s in air. Middle A has a wavelength of about 0.78 m. So f = 343 ÷ 0.78 ≈ 440 Hz — concert pitch A4.
Does the formula work for light and radio waves too?
Yes — f = v ÷ λ applies to all waves. For light in a vacuum use v = 3×10⁸ m/s and enter the wavelength in metres (e.g. 500 nm = 5×10⁻⁷ m).
