Frequently asked questions
What is the formula for velocity?
Average velocity equals displacement divided by the time taken: v = Δx ÷ t. For example, 100 m covered in 9.58 s gives 100 ÷ 9.58 ≈ 10.44 m/s.
What is the difference between speed and velocity?
Speed is how fast something moves (a scalar). Velocity is speed in a given direction (a vector), so it can be negative when the motion reverses. This tool reports the average magnitude.
How do I convert m/s to km/h?
Multiply metres per second by 3.6 to get kilometres per hour, or by about 2.237 to get miles per hour. The calculator shows all three automatically.
