The minimalist creator stack worth rebuilding around

A pared-down toolkit for shipping video, photos, and writing — fewer apps, fewer plugins, fewer reasons to fight your setup.

Every working creator accumulates a graveyard of half-installed plugins and forgotten subscriptions. The stack that actually ships is always smaller than the one in your Notion. Here is a sketch of a leaner, kinder version.

One camera, two lenses, no excuses

A modern phone shoots better video than most prosumer cameras did five years ago. For the work that needs more, one mirrorless body plus a 35mm and an 85mm covers 90% of what a creator actually publishes. Renting glass beats owning it.

One mic that travels everywhere

A small wireless lav with on-board recording and a 3.5mm output is the workhorse mic of the decade. It handles podcasts, voiceovers, vlogs, and emergency interviews. Two transmitters and a battery case fit in a pencil pouch.

One editor — and learn its shortcuts

Pick one NLE and live in it. Premiere, Final Cut, Resolve, CapCut — every modern editor is good enough. The leverage is in your fingers: trim, slip, ripple, JKL scrubbing. A creator with 30 hot keys outpaces one with 30 plugins.

One writing app — markdown, local-first

A plain markdown editor that works offline, syncs through a folder, and never holds your text hostage. iA Writer, Obsidian, even Vim. The platform-of-the-month note-taking app will be gone in two years. Markdown will not.

One AI assistant — used like an editor, not a writer

AI is excellent at tightening prose, breaking writer's block, and renaming files. It is mediocre at having ideas. The creators getting leverage out of it treat it like a sharp junior editor — pass it drafts, accept some changes, ignore the rest.

And what to delete

  • Color grading plugins you never opened.
  • Stock music subscriptions you renew but rarely use.
  • Notion templates that have become procrastination engines.
  • The third camera body.
