Frequently asked questions
How is the sand volume calculated?
Volume = length × width × depth. A 5 m × 4 m area filled to 5 cm (0.05 m) gives 5 × 4 × 0.05 = 1 m³. The calculator handles unit conversions automatically.
Why is 1600 kg/m³ used for density?
Dry loose sand has a typical bulk density of around 1600 kg/m³. Wet or compacted sand can reach 1800–1900 kg/m³, so treat the result as a minimum and add a small margin when ordering.
Do suppliers sell sand by weight or volume?
It varies by supplier and region. Many sell by the tonne (or short ton), while bulk bags are often quoted in cubic metres or cubic yards. This calculator shows both mass and volume so you can match either.
