Machining Time Calculator

Calculate cutting time from cut length, feed rate, and number of passes for CNC and manual machining.

Machining time
0.5 min
Total cutting time for 1 pass at 400 mm/min feed rate. Excludes rapid moves and tool changes.
Time in seconds
30 s
Time per pass
0.5 min

How it works

  1. 1Enter the total cut length and the feed rate — the unit toggle switches between mm with mm/min and inches with in/min.
  2. 2Specify the number of passes required.
  3. 3The calculator divides length by feed rate and multiplies by the passes for total cutting time.

Use cases

  • Estimating CNC milling or turning cycle times for quoting and scheduling.
  • Comparing how feed rate affects total machining time.
  • Calculating multi-pass time for roughing and finishing.

Frequently asked questions

How is machining time calculated?

Time = cut length ÷ feed rate × passes. 200 mm ÷ 400 mm/min = 0.5 min per pass; with 3 passes, 1.5 min.

Does this include rapid moves and tool changes?

No — cutting time only. Actual cycle time is longer once rapids, tool changes, and dwells are added.

How do I use imperial units?

Switch the toggle to imperial and enter the cut length in inches and the feed rate in in/min; both are converted internally and the time is returned in minutes and seconds.
