Frequently asked questions
What is emission intensity?
Emission intensity (also called carbon intensity) normalises total CO₂ emissions by the quantity of output — for example, 50,000 kg ÷ 1,000 units = 50 kg CO₂/unit. It lets you compare the cleanliness of production independently of scale.
Why is intensity more useful than total emissions?
A growing business will typically emit more in absolute terms even while becoming cleaner. Intensity strips out the scale effect: if intensity falls, each unit is being made with less carbon, which is the real efficiency signal.
What should I use as the output unit?
Any consistent measure works — physical units produced, tonnes of product, hours of service, or even revenue. The critical requirement is that you use the same output definition across every period or site you compare, otherwise the intensity figures are not comparable.
