Frequently asked questions
What is cycle time and how is it calculated?
Cycle time is the average time needed to complete one unit of output. It equals net production time divided by units produced. For example, 480 minutes ÷ 120 units = 4 min/unit (240 seconds/unit).
What is the difference between cycle time and takt time?
Takt time is the rate at which customers demand product (available time ÷ demand). Cycle time is the rate at which the line actually produces. Cycle time ≤ takt time means the line can meet demand; cycle time > takt time signals a bottleneck.
Does “net production time” include breaks and downtime?
No — net production time excludes scheduled breaks, changeovers, and planned downtime. Use only the time the line was actively running. Using gross shift time will under-report cycle time and over-estimate capacity.
