What density does the calculator use for asphalt?
Compacted hot-mix asphalt is about 2300 kg/m³ (143 lb/ft³), a standard planning figure. Actual density varies by mix design and compaction, so your contractor may use a slightly different value.
How much should I add for waste?
Add 5–10% to the calculated tonnage for spreading losses, uneven subbase, and edge trimming. A 20 m × 4 m driveway at 5 cm needs about 9.2 t — order 10 t to be safe.
What thickness is standard for a driveway?
A single compacted layer of 5 cm (2 in) suits light residential driveways. Commercial or heavy-traffic areas usually need 7.5–10 cm (3–4 in), sometimes in two lifts.
