How it works

  1. 1Enter the nominal (stated) annual interest rate.
  2. 2Pick how often it compounds — yearly, quarterly, monthly, or daily.
  3. 3See the APY and how much extra the compounding adds.

Use cases

  • Compare savings accounts quoted with different compounding.
  • Turn a stated rate into the yield you actually earn.
  • Understand why monthly compounding beats annual.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between APR and APY?

APR is the stated (nominal) rate ignoring compounding. APY is the effective yield once compounding is applied, so APY is higher whenever interest compounds more than once a year.

How is APY calculated?

APY = (1 + r/n)^n − 1, where r is the nominal rate and n is the number of compounding periods per year.
